Wisconsin
Wisconsin has not enacted or repealed major gun safety policies in recent years, despite significant public pressure to enact protective laws in 2020. The Badger State has failed to pass laws requiring background checks for all gun sales or an Extreme Risk law, but has also resisted gun lobby pressure to repeal its concealed carry permit law or enact Shoot First. In early 2025, in response to the mass shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, Governor Evers signed an executive order establishing an Office of Violence Prevention to help coordinate gun violence prevention efforts throughout the state.
The state experiences a gun violence rate just near the national average, with Black residents being significantly more likely to die by gun homicide than white residents.
If Wisconsin had the gun death rate of our National Leaders—the 10 states with the strongest gun safety laws—we could save 4,444 lives in the next decade.1Everytown Research analysis of CDC WONDER state gun death rates and Everytown Gun Law Rankings 2026. Based on projected gun deaths, 2026–2035.
