Texas
Despite the fact that three of the five worst mass shootings since 2015 have taken place in Texas, state lawmakers continue to sit on their hands and refuse to enact foundational gun safety laws. To the contrary, the laws passed in recent years have torn down existing protections. Texas now forces colleges and universities to allow guns on their campuses, requires an armed presence in K–12 schools, including by allowing school personnel to carry guns, and, as of 2021, has no requirement to get a permit before carrying a concealed handgun in public.
If Texas had the gun death rate of our National Leaders—the 10 states with the strongest gun safety laws—we could save 29,498 lives in the next decade.1Everytown Research analysis of CDC WONDER state gun death rates and Everytown Gun Law Rankings 2026. Based on projected gun deaths, 2026–2035.
