Mississippi
Mississippi has among the weakest gun laws in the country. The state has none of the foundational gun laws in place, and only a few policies total—having most recently repealed the requirement to get a permit before carrying a concealed handgun in public. It also has one of the highest rates of gun deaths in the country. Mississippi is also among the top states in household firearm ownership.
If Mississippi had the gun death rate of our National Leaders—the 10 states with the strongest gun safety laws—we could save 6,853 lives in the next decade.1Everytown Research analysis of CDC WONDER state gun death rates and Everytown Gun Law Rankings 2026. Based on projected gun deaths, 2026–2035.
