Alabama has a weak set of gun safety protections. It has one of the highest rates of gun deaths and gun homicides in the country. In 2022, state elected officials repealed their last remaining foundational law with permitless carry legislation, which now allows concealed carry in public without a permit, training, or a background check.
In spite of its considerable gun safety failures, Alabama did pass important laws in 2015 that keep guns away from domestic abusers and, in 2025, strengthened those laws to close the dating partner loophole, as well as passed a law to prohibit auto sears.
